MMMM. we had this for lunch. I generally chop an onion and fry it for a bit in some oil, rinse some red lentils well, add them to the onion and pour in some water and bring it up to the boil. Keep an eye on them and skim any scum off as it forms, rinsing them can reduce the ammount of scum. Once they are cooked, you can either blitz them or serve it as it is. I prefer it liquidised. Sometimes I add cumin, bacon, tinned toms, coriander seeds the options are endless.

Forgot, you can also use a stock cube for flavour. I favor mushroom but I don't know if you can get them in england.

I have two I do, a harvest veg soup with red lentils and a beef, leek and lentil one with white lentils.

Both very tasty.

For just plain dahl I add red lentils, water, a clove, half an onion and a bayleaf.
