Attempted one last xmas which ended up as a big pile of ingredients and in no way resembled a Yule Log.

Any recipes??

Just an ordinary swiss roll recipe either made as a Victoria sponge recipe or a fatless sponge (better).
When it is cooked, I reckon it is better to immediately cover it (still in the baking tin) with a layer of greaseproof and a damp tea towel over that.
When cold you need to turn it out onto a large piece of greaseproof paper that has been sprinkled with sugar(caster or even icing) and then spread your filling and roll it up carefully using the greaseproof paper to control the rolling!
Then you need large amounts of butter cream or other icing to cover it ( if you are clever you can cut diagonal slices off both ends and stick these to the sides of the log to make it look a bit more log like) and hide the cracks etc.
