Making chutney. I have two questions.

Firstly, the vinegar. I bought malt vinegar. Should I have bought clear (distilled) vinegar or doesn't it matter?

Secondly, the jars. I went to ikea and thought I'd got the bargain of the century when they were selling Kilner type jars for 89p each. But when I put water in one and held it upsidedown, it drips. I guess if it's not watertight it's probably not airtight? Should I buy more expensive jars?

Thanks riven. I used the malt vinegar. It tastes wonderful. I've put it in the crappy jars and added an extra cling film seal. Hope that'll keep out the bacteria!
