Can I cook this chicken?

I've had a whole chicken in the freezer for five months. Took it out last night to thaw. The label says 'use within one month of freezing'. Is it still ok to cook??
I'd eat it myself personally, just wondering about the DCs...

does it have freezer burn?

mrspnut · 04/12/2009 14:50

It'll be fine, I regularly ignore such instructions and none of us have died.

Like Thrifty said, it's more about freezer burn than bacterial growth.

AnnieOneForMulledWine · 04/12/2009 14:52

what's freezer burn? like bits that are all frosty?

thrifty · 04/12/2009 14:55

when you've defrosted it does it have any white stringy looking bits on it?

AnnieOneForMulledWine · 04/12/2009 14:57

oh, apparently it has - up it's arse. Nice.(Explanation: I'm at work, DH is home 'cooking'.) He has just binned it.
Thanks anyway girls.
So, thrifty for future reference, if it has freezer burns, you wouldn't use it? Otherwise ok?

you could still eat it (in theory) but it'd be horrible, tough as old boots and really not palateable.

AnnieOneForMulledWine · 04/12/2009 16:17

thanks thrifty. good to know!

A shame to waste it. Hook it out of the bin and "Soup" it.

lol silver!

Sorry I missed this as I am in the know on this

It is quality in frozen food not safety that is your problem. So as thrifty says it may be a bit tough but 5m it should be fine.

How long do you think your frozen chicken from Birds eye etc has been frozen for? Could be 2 years no probs

AnnieOneForMulledWine · 05/12/2009 12:55

Ah, ok callme, so it would have been safe to eat, but just not very succulent?
It was actually fresh when I bought it, then I froze it, it wasn't a Bernard Manning job. But I see what you mean. Thanks!
