I know Sainsburys have got 4 different champagnes on offer each for £14 at the moment but we're having a party, need to buy in relative bulk and are very poor... There's loads of Cava, Prosecco etc on offer for Christmas but is it any good?

Please may I have your cheap fizz favourites?

Oooh not nearly so much a specialist subject of mine as lager. But prosecco is very nice - I think I would go for that above cava.

Why don't you buy a bottle of Prosecco (try to get one that says Valdobiadenne) and a bottle of Brut cava and see which you prefer. Road-testing wine is fun

I am quite excited about this party of yours

Who is it for?

ISNT It's for my 40th birthday. After much thought and listening to lots of people telling me how they'd celebrated theirs with a trolley dash in Tiffanys or how their husband had rented a private island and trained a million fireflies to write their name in the sky I decided that as DH was made redundant earlier this year and is not the demonstrative type anyway none of that was on the cards for me and, more importantly, I wanted to celebrate where I am and what I've already got so I'm having an afternoon party for my lovely friends and all our children.

I think I'd prefer Prosecco to Cava and most of the nibbles will lean in the Italian direction but I drink so rarely these days (apart from days like today when I'm driven to swigging the Tesco Value brandy meant for the Christmas cake) I don't trust my judgement so I'd still like specific recommendations please!

Sounds like a fab party. Ridiculous overblown events are so passe

Happy birthday in advance!

Lindauer (sp) is nice cava (IMO). We actually had it for our wedding (went through a lot of bottles so no way could have champers!).

Tesco's premier cru is Verve Cliquot just in a different bottle - so DH says and he is a wine buff - he got the info from one of his best mates who has traded in his pension and is making a fortune buying and selling wine!!

He is in spain at the mo and I am just off to drink a £90 bottle of wine with my mate without his knowledge as he hasn't replenished my £5 a bottle stash!! How happy will he be when he gets home!!!!!

If you like pink, the Jacobs Creek sparkling Rose is lovely and I believe, is on offer at the moment in Tescos for £6 a bottle!!

Bargain I think - it is really nice

Sorry - meant to do a link

HERE it is.

In the end I ordered Asda Extra Special Prosecco. 6 bottles for £25. It's won medals & stuff so hopefully it's OK but if you know differently, I've got until 10pm to amend my order so let me know!
