Plum Pudding in Aga - can anyone help please

Am about to do my Plum Pudding in Aga for first time ... Mary Berry says bring to boil on boiling plate - for half an hour (or something like that!!) and then overnight in simmering oven with lid on pan (and water in pan obviously ) ... do you really put the lid on and do you need to top it up overnight. Is there a wise cook who can shed a little light for me please?
