also - has anyone had any experience of using this? will it be like using red food colouring, which in my experience just goes pink .. will it just go sludgy grey??

I did a race circuit for my ds and bought black colouring, which I must have got from Sainsburys.

But yes you are right it ended up a sludgy grey race track (which thankfully didn't matter)

You can buy ready coloured icing from sainsburys but I could only get packs with quite small amount of 3 or 4 colours rather than being able to buy a bigger box of just black on it's own.

How much do you need?

It's impossible to make good black icing - it always goes grey. If you really want to try use paste colours and add a bit of brown. But I do a lot of cakes and I always buy black icing - there's lots available online, or if you've got a cake decorating shop locally they'll have it. Or supermarkes have packets of coloured icing which includes some black - depends how much you need. A warning - the packets of coloured icing always include a green which is a horrible colour!
