Has anyone ever made pear jam before and have a good recipe?

I have a pear tree in my garden and I've got hundreds of the things.

I have made jam out of most fruits, but have never tried pear, but it has got to be worth a go. Generally, I find equal weights of fruit to sugar works well - weigh pears and note the weight for the sugar required. Wash, peel and core the pears, chop and put in a big pan. Add sugar. As pears are a bit lacking in acid, I would add the juice of a lemon or two (or three if you are making loads of jam). Cook over a medium heat until the setting point is reached. Take off the heat and leave it to stand for a bit, skim off the nasty scummy bits and then put into warm, sterilised jars.
This is just my best guess as to a recipe, so unless someone gives you a tried and trusted one, it it probably best to try a small amount first, rather than your entire pear harvest!
Pears also make a really good caramel upside-down cake. Let me know if you want to go there.

Thankyou. I've had a look online but I'm confused, my MIL said I would need to add pectin but none of the recipes I have found do. I will try a little with your recipe and if it doesn't set I will add pectin, but how much do I use?

I'm not sure about pear jam - think you might end up with pear mush, though I'm not an expert by any means. What about pear and ginger chutney? Easier to make than jam and will be ready in time for Christmas.

Pear liqueur would be yummy.

Ha!! I thought the thread said Pearl Jam!! I was about to get interested as they are a favourite of mine. Never mind. I'll go now as I've got nothing useful to contribute!!!!!

Sorry, pear jam is not nearly as interesting. I'm going to try doing chutney instead. Great idea. Thankyou!

Pear liqueur?
