Passata - can I make it from tinned toms?

The local shops don't sell passata - I need it for a Nigella tomato sauce - can I make my own from tinned toms - and if so is it just a case of liquidising them?!!!

I don't know what Nigella's recipe is for tomato sauce but I make my own out of tinned toms. I use 1 large-ish onion and 2 or 3 of cloves of garlic, fry them up til they're soft, then chuck in 2-3 tins of tomatoes, some fresh basil and some fresh oregano. You can alter the amounts if you like it more or less garlicky or oniony, that's just a general guide.

Simmer it all up for a while then use a hand blender if you have one, you can whizz it up while it's still in the saucepan then. Alternatively just chuck it in the blender.

The sauce is good for pretty much any Italian food and it freezes well. HTH!

Well I tried to make my own by liquidising cans of toms and then sraining out the pips. This was exceedingly messy and the recipe didn't work that well compared to using real passata.

Passata is something you should never be without I have learnt
