Can you use different size and cake tins for baking when the recipe specifies another?

Hi

I want to bake a chocolate cake, but either in a rectangular tin or in a loaf tin, but I only have a recipe for a round sandwich tin. Does anyone know if it makes any different to put sandwich tin quantities into other tins or does anyone have any recipes for rectangular or loaf tins for chocolate cake?
