I have just started to decorate my own cakes, I was given a cake decorating book for my birthday after constantly complaining about the quality of birthday cakes in the supermarket.
My question is this; where [online] would you recommend I buy my bits and pieces, and what should I buy?
I have had a look around and am feeling overwhelmed by the choice. What colour paste should I go for? I am also a bit confused about edible sparkle/glitter powder. Some websites say it it inedible, some say it is non toxic and you could eat it.

DS2 has just picked a cake out of my party cake book.... he wants a chuffin burger >

ByThePowerOfGreyskull · 04/11/2009 18:18

Bella sounds great... how old is he?? can you convince him to have a pizza instead?

ComeOveneer · 04/11/2009 18:27

I am making a cake for an 80th this weekend, along the lines of Gustave Klimt's the kiss

bellavita · 04/11/2009 18:51

He will be 10 - a pizza would fit in with the theme actually as he is going to the cinema with 2 friends - he has asked if I can sit on a separate row to them, then they are going to make their own pizzas when we come back - him and two friends.

Now, tell me more about a pizza cake.... so I can convince him.

Oh wow COV - you are just the queen of cakes

ByThePowerOfGreyskull · 04/11/2009 19:47

I would do a 10" round cake, get thee to pizza hut and get a box, serve the cake in the box, make some of his favorite toppings out of paste. if you google pizza cakes there are loads of great pictures.

bellavita · 04/11/2009 20:17

The biggest tin I have is 8"... think am gonna have to give in and do the burger cake. Luckily, he wants the cake for a week on Sat, so I can make the cake this weekend and freeze, then decorate it on the Friday night.

Olihan · 04/11/2009 22:04

I love how different all the cakes we are doing are . My mind is boggling at the Klimt though, I just don;t have the imagination to see it as a cake. COV, will you put it on your profile as soon as you've done it?

I've just done a box of tissues (random but very easy!) and now I'm doing a High School bleeding Musical cake. With models of the recipents in the costumes.

Standing models.

Eek.

On the plus side, I'm going to the Cake Show at the NEC on Saturday . Anyone fancy it? Slubber, I'm going past your door pratically to pick up E from class so if you want a lift..........

bellavita · 04/11/2009 22:19

Cake Show and even more

Can you come via York please Slubs?

ByThePowerOfGreyskull · 04/11/2009 22:31

I would love to go there Olihan... would you look out for something for me?

Olihan · 04/11/2009 22:36

What do you want Greyskull?

I could see if they'd do a MN discount for bauble moulds too .

Bella, York's not that far. If you can get to Chester train station I'll take you, there's 7 seats in my car for anyone who doesn't mind having biscuity chocolatey unidentified mush dog hair stuck to their bum all day wants to come....

bellavita · 04/11/2009 22:37

Oh [doh emoticon] I said Slubs instead of Olihan

Slubberdegullion · 05/11/2009 09:49

Oi Olihan did you see my thread I did especially for you? Were you poorly on tuesday?

Thank for the invite but I really really really MUST NOT buy any more kit atm. I have so much stuff that I haven't even properly used yet and I KNOW if I go to the NEC then I'll spend 50 quid poof just like that.

I broached the subject of the kitchen aid with dh for a Christmas present for me last night. All he asked was does it cost less than an Aga...so I think I may be in with a chance. I've just been perusing their site. Am quite drawn to the cobalt blue.

Right. Must crack on with the 17 egger.

ComeOveneer · 05/11/2009 11:57

I goyt my kitchenaid last christmas, tis my pride and joy (other than my children of course ).

I would love to do the cake show, but busy, maybe we should all plan to go next year?

PlumBumMum · 05/11/2009 12:54

Oh I had a leaflet fo NEC show and was joking with dh as he flies to Birmingham every year for a trade show for himself, so jokingly said that I will have to do that now

Maybe next year COV

And I am all chuffed my friend who makes wedding cakes has asked ME to make her a shoe for a ccake shes doing, although she wants 2 for Sunday and I never got the christening cake decorated as my head is killing me
eek the pressure(I know why am I on here, have loads to do)

ByThePowerOfGreyskull · 05/11/2009 13:37

Olihan if I post you a link to something similar... I can find them in the states

they are made by a company called designer stencils I would like a flowery one I don't mind specific design.

stealthsquiggle · 05/11/2009 13:52

Freezing of moulds is temporary (to firm it up to get them out of the mould cleanly) and yes it does sweat - they need to go on a sponge/rack for a couple of days to dry properly before painting.

Klimt, CoV? Hmmm, interesting.... I am sure I have a book with a pseudo-Klimt inspired cake in it.

Nope, I am sticking to baubles in the interest of sanity. I would tell you all what I am doing for DS's birthday on Saturday (it involves dry ice) but then I would have to run round the room screaming with panic that I am not at home and will have about 4 hours, all of the in the middle of the night, to complete the blooming thing and do the rest of the party prep

stealthsquiggle · 05/11/2009 13:56

Slubber - don't be seduced by the pretty colours - the more powerful (commercial) kitchenaid comes in white or grey and comes with 2 bowls (very useful) and overload switch (so you can't kill it) and a much better motor.

I am exceedingly fond of mine .

Slubberdegullion · 05/11/2009 13:58

but I want BLUE to match my mugs on my mug tree (oh yes)

Where do you get a commercial kitchen aid from then? I hope it's as pritty as the other ones.

stealthsquiggle · 05/11/2009 14:02

here you go - I think it's lovely!

Slubberdegullion · 05/11/2009 14:24

but look here is the John Lewis one which comes with a free bowl and a five year guarrantee, whereas your commercial one only has 12 months.

There only seems to be 25 watts in it. What's 25 watts amongst friends?

Steathy you are going to have to hard sell me the dullard white one.

Slubberdegullion · 05/11/2009 14:26

have looked at the pdf and it isn't a bowl it's a jug ffs.

I still want blue.

ByThePowerOfGreyskull · 06/11/2009 12:19

morning all,
hope everyone is ok,

I just am bursting to share with someone..
this morning I have been asked by 2 different ladies to make their wedding cakes for next summer I am soooo chuffed Have estimated cost, for simple 3 tier sponge at £150 hope that isn't too far off.. what do you think enough, not enough etc??

Slubberdegullion · 06/11/2009 17:46

Congrats BTPOG. Haven't a clue about costs I'm afraid, the other profeshnials will advise I'm sure. What sort of decoration do they want?

Oi stealthy, I have sent dh the link for the commercial kitchen aid today, the two bowls and non blow upable option swayed me over the luscious colours. White goes with everything anyway doesn't it?

PlumBumMum · 06/11/2009 18:02

BTPOGS That sounds abit cheap for 3 tiers I thought that would be the starting price for 2 teirs, I would google a few cake shops and see.
Congratulations btw thats brilliant

And I'm crap at pricing, I finished the christening cake, now MIL rang and said someone wants an irish dancing cake so I will need to google[eek]

ByThePowerOfGreyskull · 06/11/2009 20:13

thanks ladies,
Plum, pictures of the christening cake.... go on, you know you want to!!
