I have just started to decorate my own cakes, I was given a cake decorating book for my birthday after constantly complaining about the quality of birthday cakes in the supermarket.
My question is this; where [online] would you recommend I buy my bits and pieces, and what should I buy?
I have had a look around and am feeling overwhelmed by the choice. What colour paste should I go for? I am also a bit confused about edible sparkle/glitter powder. Some websites say it it inedible, some say it is non toxic and you could eat it.

Anybody??? Need to make other half of cake after school, but will be no point if you all think it won't be ok by Sunday??????

Slubberdegullion · 04/11/2009 14:39

It will be fine for sunday so long as you ice it OR freeze it (and ice it later).

PlumBumMum · 04/11/2009 15:24

Thanks Slubberdegullion, will be icing later then,
but for future reference if I froze it, is it ok to ice frozen or do you defrost and then ice?

Slubberdegullion · 04/11/2009 15:28

You know I don't know. I've frozen lots of cakes before but none of them have been the icing variety.

I reckon if you were doing buttercream icing then you could stick that straight onto a frozen cake.

My gut feeling if you were sugarpasting (or royal icing) it is to wait until it has defrosted.

I may be talking out of my arse here. I do frequently

PlumBumMum · 04/11/2009 15:33

Its ok I normally make it up as I go along to and hope for the best

Well my little old neighbour bakes everyone an ordinary sponge, buttercream and runny icing(as I call it) for Xmas and frezes themall made ready to give out so the buttercream bit would definitely be alright

Slubberdegullion · 04/11/2009 15:35

All I know is you must not ever never freeze or even refrigerate sugar paste. It goes all weird, squidgy and sweaty.

Slubberdegullion · 04/11/2009 15:38

lol

saying that, stealthy with her damnable silicone moulds sticks them in the freezer.

What do I know?

bellavita · 04/11/2009 16:35

Needs to get her own arse in gear as it is DS2's birthday a week today and no doubt he will be wanting a cake doing...

Slubberdegullion · 04/11/2009 17:09

I'm making my 17 egg christmas cake (divided by four avec le silverwood) tomorrow. Am rubbing baby bio and linement oil into my arms as we speak.

Don't tell baldy, I'm so going to trump her and her 10 egg tiramisu.

bellavita · 04/11/2009 17:12

10 egg tiramisu

DS2 (10 next week) came home tonight and said oh mum, you can make 50 buns for the xmas fayre can't you? We all had to put ideas in for stalls and I came up with an icing your own bun stall..... >

Slubberdegullion · 04/11/2009 17:20

lol

ah yes isn't it fab when your dc put you forward for something. 50 buns, what is that 50 fairy cakes? Oh you'll crack those off in no time .

And what's with the for the tirimasu ? SEVENTEEN eggs my cake's got in tomorrow. SEVENTEEN.

That is a whole lot of eggs.

ComeOveneer · 04/11/2009 17:21

Oh hello everyone. A cake decorating thread I see, may I join in?

Slubberdegullion · 04/11/2009 17:22

Of course you can COV.

You know we will all be x 50 at your cakes though.

What are you doing for your christmas cake this year then?

ComeOveneer · 04/11/2009 17:29

Am doing 10 smaller ones for a christmas fair, various designs. Ours is either going to be sants in bed on the top with the words "twas the night before christmas", then a washing line with all his clothes on around the sides, or red with a flurry of layers(rings) of triangular shards curving outwards and a tall thin stylised santa in the middle.

Moosy · 04/11/2009 17:42

How are you going to fit 17 eggs' worth of cake into a silverwood tin?! I know those tins are big, but really??

ByThePowerOfGreyskull · 04/11/2009 17:49

Sounds great CoV.
I have practiced my gluten free diabetic cake and it was dreadful. back to the drawing board

have some new pictures to put up later and just taken 3 new orders for december.. things getting a bit chocker now.. need to learn that little 2 letter word.... hmm what was it again??

ByThePowerOfGreyskull · 04/11/2009 17:50

ooh loving the

bellavita · 04/11/2009 17:57

Yeah Slubs, but when you divide yours into four cakes, tis just 4 1/4 eggs for each. It must be a big tiramisu for 10 eggs.

Tell me ladies, which is the best cup cake book to buy? There are loads on Amazon..

bellavita · 04/11/2009 17:58

Aah - have just seen that new emoticon - fab.

PlumBumMum · 04/11/2009 18:00
