since hearing they are full of omega 3 we want to start eating them. does anyone have any ideas for interesting salad or savoury recipes (not cakes etc) that include walnuts?

can't think of many things to do with them apart form walnut bread, a salad of good lettuce with goat cheese and walnuts (with french dressing, maybe with walnut oil if you have any), or as a snack: stuff a dried fig with a walnut: delicious (it's called a 'mendiant' in France).

Twiglett · 10/06/2005 17:55

do you not though have a sneaky suspicion that life is too short to be stuffing dried figs with anything?

FrenchGirl · 10/06/2005 17:56

but life without things being stuffed by other things would be dull!!!

Waldorf salad?

Enid · 10/06/2005 21:04

this is one of my fave thread titles

My dad loves them pickled - but you need to get them off the tree green for that & we can't reach

There's a nice pasta dish...Boil some penne, drain, return to the pan and mix in some crumbled gorgonzola, some sage leaves (I like lots of them) and some walnut pieces.

Yummy!

Endive, walnut and blue cheese salad with a garlicky vinaigreet made with walnut oil, accompanied by potatoes and a rare steak and a cracking bottle of red wine. Heaven!!

When I lived in Moscow, went to a lot of georgian restaurants.Georgian food is divine, and a particularly lovely thing was a walnut paste drizzled over chicken. Keep on meaning to experiment with it.

(Now I live in Turkey and they are mad for hazelnuts. Do a divine hazelnut paste that drives me wild with nut lust!)

My Mum always puts walnuts in her home made coleslaw - really yummy. Just eating them on their own is nice too!

Jamie Oliver does a fab simple salad with rocket, watercress, really juicy pears like Taylors gold, walnuts and parmesan, with lemon and olive oil dressing and pepper. It's delicious.

also good with blue cheese in a salad with oil and balsalmic.

WigWamBam · 10/06/2005 23:17

Toast them and put them into cheesy or creamy pasta sauces.

They used to do Walnut Whips with plain chocolate - they were lovely
