How to send a food parcel?

I am going to ask my mum to send me a food parcel of the local food that I miss (she is in Preston, I am near Newcastle). How should she package it and does she need to pay extra/tell the post office/use a courier company with it being food?

Depends what the food is.

My friend's mum sent her a salmon, but neglected to mention it to my friend. She was out when the postie called and, not knowing what was in the unexpected parcel, took a few days to get round to collecting it.

From the Post Office website:

"Fresh Fruit, Meat, Fish and other Perishable Articles should be able to withstand a journey of up to 48 hours and must be sent preferably by Special Delivery? or by First Class as the minimum service. Packages must be clearly labelled ?PERISHABLE?.Packages of fish should be smoked or chilled, and sealed in vacuum packs. In all cases they must be enclosed in adequate polystyrene to prevent contamination.It is the responsibility of the sender to package all perishable articles so that the contents are kept at a temperature that is unlikely to harm."

I want to send my Sister a Caraway seed cake!, any info on how please?.

Wrap it well in baking paper then bubble wrap - pop it in a box with more bubble wrap to cushion it
Write "Fragile" on each side of the box
Take it to the post office and, for items that are best eaten as fresh as possible, send guaranteed next day delivery

Wrap in greaseproof paper (if it's not packaged), then wrap that in bubble wrap or the kind of paper you get in Amazon packages, and send via Special Delivery. Write FRAGILE or PERISHABLE on the side.

Whatever it was it will be well past it's use-by date, 9 years past in fact.
