I have tried lots of ways and am crap tbh - the best ever i did was at xmas and everyone commented on how nice and creamy it was .... my trick to serve 6 - well it involved buying ready made extra special maris piper mash from asda (89p) - two cartons, 3 minutes ta daaaaaaaa.

potato ricer, butter, hot milk and cream, and truffle flavoured oil (no idea if it tastes anything like the real thing, but mash tastes lovely so can't be bad). lots of pepper.

Oh and I put in some mint and thyme when I'm boiling the potatoes.

Electric whisk = really yummy mash

Food processor or hand held blender = yucky glutinous mash. There is a difference!!

If using milk - always heat. Cream and butter, lots of black pepper (or nutmeg also nice). I think using the whisk whips up the cream and makes the potato really light.

Wholegrain mustard is nice, or chopped and cooked spring onions, or some grated cheese, or flavoured cream cheese.

Or use Olive oil and garlic (drizzle in olive oil until you get right texture)

I wouldn't recommend any ready made mashed potato I've ever bought - its all sloppy and glutinous. yuck.

Eat directly off the wooden spoon
