How do I dredge with icing sugar?

I've just made a cake and it should be so moist that it needs no icing - just want to finish it off with some icing sugar. What can I use to make it look even and pretty?

Sieve it or paper doylies (sp?) on the top and sprinkle over. If not paper doyles and your are creative cut out patterns on sheet of paper????
