out of date nutmeg?

i have a jar or whole nutmeg that i've had forever i went to use it yesterday and couldn't read the use by date... actually the best guess was jan 00 but i don't think i've had it that long! so, how can you tell if it's gone bad? there's no mould and it seems to smell ok... what would you do?

taste it and see if it's retained it's flavour? I'd guess that old spices would lose some of their punch is all

It won't do you any harm. Just be a bit weedy, I'd imagine.
