If it's the Tunnocks teacakes then they are a staple food here in Scotland. One of the best things about living north of the border - deelish.

Hassled · 17/08/2009 22:23

It was a Tunnock! Yay! I'm going to smuggle them into the DCs' packed lunches come hell or high water - am on a mission now .

Shellseeker · 17/08/2009 22:25

Hassled - out of sheer selflessness, I have just eaten a teacake in your honour. It was v. yummy. You can buy them at most supermarkets, I think.

Hassled · 17/08/2009 22:25

I did have Wagon Wheels as well - they were a damned fine packed lunch treat. Much better than a (if you want a lot of chocolate on your biscuit join our) Club.

Hassled · 17/08/2009 22:30

I am so touched by your selflessness, Shellseeker - I just can't find the words. Thank you .

Goober · 17/08/2009 22:33

Bread also bad so an empty box will do, they will all prosper, the future generation!

GrimmaTheNome · 17/08/2009 22:34

I'm so glad someone else has already mentioned Sandwich Spread and Shipphams pastes. See, our mums knew what they were doing.

Though for a posh sandwich we had something which I haven't yet heard objection to - tinned salmon. As I wouldn't drink milk and yogurt was an exotic luxury, I think I wouldn't have any bones at all if it wasn't for those lovely crunchy vertebrae.

Mumcentreplus · 17/08/2009 22:36

baked beans?.. too much salt

I sent them with Hot pasta in tomato sauce, peppers & cheese they liked that
..is that bad?,salt,sugar,starch,cancer? (peppers)..Oh crap

GrimmaTheNome · 17/08/2009 22:39

Baked beans nowadays only have too much salt because they've taken so much out that you have to grind in your own... well, thats how it works in my house

Shellseeker · 17/08/2009 22:39

Still wondering why OP said that jam was banned...

GrimmaTheNome · 17/08/2009 22:40

And peppers aren't carcinogenic. Pepper is, I believe.

GrimmaTheNome · 17/08/2009 22:42

Because jam is usually >50% sugar I'd imagine. You can't actually make jam without quite a large proportion. Diabetic 'sugarfree' jam will give you the squits, that is definitely a lunch-box no-no!

Shellseeker · 17/08/2009 22:43

Oh bugger - I put pepper on everything. Might as well give up now.

Mumcentreplus · 17/08/2009 22:44

I love pepper well black pepper (crushed)..thought it was good for the circulation..or is that chilli?

My Great G used to eat chilli straight from the plant and she lived till 96!

Jam everyday to much sugar..my DD2 only gets it on Fridays

Hassled · 17/08/2009 22:48

My Great Aunt Hilda (as formidable as the name suggests) used to put so much salt on her food that everything looked white. It was quite breathtaking to watch. And she made her own clotted cream. She died at 98.

danthe4th · 17/08/2009 22:51

I haven't read all the thread but I thought it was only cheap processed ham they were referring too not good quality sliced ham or have I got it wrong?

GrimmaTheNome · 17/08/2009 22:54

Oh, I use black pepper too. I mean, you don't exactly eat it by the ounce, do you?

A lot of the curry spices are meant to be really good for you (esp turmeric). And they help preserve food...

I have it! Curried chicken in a pita or chapatti wrap!

Shellseeker · 17/08/2009 22:56

I made my own ham today from our own pig, so I have decided it must only refer to horrid cheap stuff, not my lovely Nigella ham in Coca-cola.

Waddya mean, coca-cola is bad for you?

gigglewitch · 18/08/2009 00:44

Hassled, so did my grandmother. We reckon it preserved her Along with the "medicinal whisky"
She died at 101.

chichichien · 18/08/2009 17:32

oh yeas, making own ham is much better and much cheaper according to allegra whatsit in teh Metro today

abra1d · 18/08/2009 17:36

I'm running out of ideas, too. THe only safe thing is to send in an empty lunch box, I think.
