Need to break the bread habit but don't know what to have for lunches. What do you have if not bread / sarnies etc? I'm having porridge for breakfast now also. Lunches need to be quick and easy and cheap! Tips please you lovely MNers!

Do wraps count?

Pasta salad normally cuts it for me.

What about pastry - Greggs sausage roll?

Holymoly321 · 16/08/2009 20:53

No carbs either if poss - but something I can chew rather than just soup!

Holymoly321 · 16/08/2009 20:54

Soup!
I have soup for lunch most days...

Holymoly321 · 16/08/2009 20:59

great name greyskull - I have the power! Anyway, I could def have soup a couple of days, but after a 'wet' breakkie of porridge everyday, need to have something to 'chew' for lunch at least three time a week.

Holymoly321 · 16/08/2009 21:01

Houmous and raw veg? Tomato and feta salad?

Holymoly321 · 16/08/2009 21:12

Houmous super yummy but fattening! But tomato and feta salad - I love that! Had forgotten all about feta! What's in felafels?

Ideas without or with few carbs:
Fruit salad.
Tuna burgers (mix tin of tuna with bit of whisked egg, make into burger shapes and lightly fry in olive oil) with salad.
Steamed fish and veg.
Vegetable Stew, make big batch and freeze into portions.

Ideas with carbs:
Brown rice cooked with tuna, chopped onion, sweetcorn peas and soy sauce to taste.
Stuffed Peppers, with rice, mushrooms etc.
Jacket potatoe.

Supercherry · 16/08/2009 21:20

Potato even.

Tillyscoutsmum · 16/08/2009 21:24

Baked eggs with mushrooms

Tomato & mozzarella salad

Stir Fry

Grammaticus · 16/08/2009 21:30

Half a tin of tuna with chopped cucumber, cherry tomatoes and balsammic vinegar.

Boiled egg, ham, salad

Grammaticus · 16/08/2009 21:31

I CAN spell balsamic

Holymoly321 · 16/08/2009 21:32

grammaticus, that sounds nice - but sounds like it is missing something carb based like bread or potatoes - do you just have it on it's own?

OP posts:
Grammaticus · 16/08/2009 21:39

Yes. I know it sounds like it won't be enough - but it is! The trick is to have plenty of protein, then it doesn't matter that the carbs are missing.

dairymoo · 17/08/2009 21:51

I agree with Grammaticus - salad is a great lunch but you def need lots of protein otherwise it won't keep you full until supper.

I normally do a massive salad with a couple of the following thrown in for protein/fat: avocado / cottage cheese / puy lentils / pumpkin seeds / smoked mackerel / hard bolied egg...

dairymoo · 17/08/2009 21:51

boiled evem

dairymoo · 17/08/2009 21:52

boiled even

ZippysMum · 18/08/2009 09:30

Make your own houmous with water instead of oil.

Tin chickpeas,
Teaspoon tahini (I quite often miss this out)
clove garlic (leave this out if you share an office),
teaspoon Marigold bouillon powder
juice of 1/2 lemon
water to get it to the right consistency

Put it all in the food processor in this order.
Yummy with ryvita, carrot / celery sticks.

can add things (red pepper, coriander etc) if you like.

Floopy21 · 18/08/2009 11:10

Cracker breads - The multi grain ryvitas are gorge. I have them with roll mops & cucumber / cheese & pickle / smoked salmon & cream cheese - anything really. Bean salads are also tasty & filling, you can cook them & they'll last for @ least three days & have them hot or cold. You can put lots in to make tasty, for example:chopped toms, onions, garlic, cumin, ginger, chilli, corrainder, spring onions, lentils, tuna flakes, any bean imaginable, split peas,buckwheat,kasha,chickpeas...starting to bore myself now
