What do you LOVE to see on a buffet?

What makes you punch the air and say, "YESSSS! They've got X!"

We're having an afternoon birthday gathering of close friends and family at home. There will be a few toddlers and maybe 20 ish adults.

So what would you be chuffed to see?

chicken kebabs

camembert

big crusty pieces of french stick

warm veg spring rolls

hairymelons · 05/08/2009 21:14

They are, I'm a big fan!
Ok, I risk sounding like a posher but I would be very pleased to see any of the following on a buffet- poached salmon with herb mayo, homemade sausage rolls, roast ham or beef or whatever, goats cheese & roast red pepper frittata, potato salad, spinach & ricotta pasties, and yes lots of lovely vol au vents. Chicken liver pate is nice too.
Basically I like protein, fat & salt. And carbs.

mrsruffallo · 05/08/2009 21:14

smoked salmon and cream cheese biegels

pattymc · 05/08/2009 21:15

can't go wrong with egg mayo for me
smoked salmon - beautiful
coronation chicken
garlic bread
chilli con carne
ok now I'm just listing fave foods

EyeballsintheSky · 05/08/2009 21:16

Little puff pastry square things with either cheese/ham or mushroom. Flat vol au vents really

Nice moist breaded chicken

sausage rolls, cooked from raw not shop cooked and reheated

Really garlicy bread

Mini quiches.

Totally any carbs really

No bloody salad Well, no more than garnish anyway

GirlsAreLoud · 05/08/2009 21:16

On the subject of those hedgehogs with cocktail sticks in them - DH and I were talking about them last night as DD is having a party on Saturday.

Neither of us could work out what is under the tinfoil on the hedgehog - what is it exactly? I thought perhaps a grapefruit, DH had his money on a melon.

mrsruffallo · 05/08/2009 21:19

Disagree with dips at parties- just look nasty after half an hour

TheArmadillo · 05/08/2009 21:19

my parents used to use half a cabbage. One of them big round white ones.

It would ruin a melon but you can still eat cabbage afterwards.

stubbyfingers · 05/08/2009 21:20

Hairy, you can sit next to OverMDB and talk posh together.

Am not so posh and love egg mayo with a tonne of mayo. A big bit of cooked meat or fish would look good wouldn't it?

Just realised, no-one has said prawn cocktail! I'm surprised really as I can scoff loads of that.

Don't think my table is big enough...

Chicken satay with peanut dip.

Rare sliced roast beef and creamy horseradish

Roasted peppers.

Oozing soft blue cheese and small slices of really dense wholemeal bread to go with.

Home made chicken liver pate and already sliced up baguette.

A nice tomato bruschetta.

Green salad dressed with a mustardy french dressing.

Tons of olives.

Parma ham, italian salami, smoked salmon.

Tbh buffet food is my idea of heaven. I love loads of cold savoury things altogether on a plate, so am very easily pleased.

Not interested in puddings at all.

hairymelons · 05/08/2009 21:22

Ok, sandwich fillings:
cheese & pickle
ham & mustard
beef & horseradish
hummus & roast red pepper
chicken, bacon & avocado
egg mayonnaise
smoked salmon, creme fraiche & chives
poached salmon mayonnaise

could also do sardines with garlic, parsley & lemon on the barbeque. YUM. But possibly a faff.

ClaireDeLoon · 05/08/2009 21:22

mmm homemade sausage rolls
nice cheese and bread
homemade quiche
corned beef and potato pie
ham with lovely beetroot pickle
some lovely cakes

in fact, just take me to my mum's 'have all the family around for tea' type meal and I'm happy

blametheparents · 05/08/2009 21:23

CADBURY CHOCOLATE FINGERS

And yes, I am SHOUTING!

Just to make sure you buy them

stubbyfingers · 05/08/2009 21:23

Girls, I was thinking a honey dew melon would do the job? But maybe I'm just thinking more things on sticks than you

OP posts:
stubbyfingers · 05/08/2009 21:24

woah...OK...I'll get some CADBURY CHOCOLATE FINGERS already!

hairymelons · 05/08/2009 21:26

The hedgehogs are oranges wrapped in foil! Or at least they always were in my house.
Prawn cocktail is my secret shame, I'm absolutely hooked on it. It's also really nice with crayfish instead of prawn, I have a lovely recipe.....

stubbyfingers · 05/08/2009 21:29

very stingy hedgehogs in your house if i may say so hairy. I have much grander plans.

Hang on, CRAYFISH? Get back to the posh corner!

Onion rings (crisps)
Olives
Carrot sticks
Houmous
Egg mayo
real butter (soft not straight from the fridge)
warm bread
Spring rolls

Fruit salad, or even better strawberry/marshmallow sticks (strawberry/marshamallow etc..)

jemart · 05/08/2009 21:33

A hog roast would be top of my wishlist.
Warm food always popular with me at buffets.

Pizza slices

roast potatoes

Onion bhajis and Samosas

Mini croissants with melted cheese filling.

Anything involving chocolate.

jemart · 05/08/2009 21:35

Tiramisu!

mrspnut · 05/08/2009 21:38

Potato wedges with some creamy dip

anything with pastry involved, sausage rolls, vol au vents etc

Smoked salmon on brown bread with lemon wedges

prawns or lobster to have with some salad (token greenery for the event)

Spiced paneer - cooking like mummyji has a good recipe and very moorish

and little sausages cooked with honey and mustard. I always end up having to buy a few kilos at a time from the butchers because I eat half of them before anyone else arrives.

stubbyfingers · 05/08/2009 21:41

Fruit salad, yes. I suppose some weirdos don't like the full on pudding fest.

Roast potatos? WTF? no. you're thinking of "what do you love to see on your roast dinner plate"

But hogroast god yes, I wish! On plasticy white muffins with applesauce. yum
