Princess cake for DDs 4th birthday

Only needs to be small, but would like to do a princess cake for DD. I am a cake making/decorating virgin - i can knock up a victoria sandwich and thats the extent of my experience.

My mother did one for me when I was a DC. You can do the Victoria sandwhich mix but bake it in a pudding basin. Ice it to look like a skirt and you can buy the pottery top half with face and arms to go on top of the skirt.

I really recommend Nigella's Buttermilk Birthday Cake. Easy recipe. I used yogurt instead of buttermilk.

I baked it in a pyrex bowl, turned it upside down and plunged a plastic barbie torso into it, then decorated the cake skirt with lots of pink and sweeties.

Naff, I know, but MY GOD my daughter thought it was the most wonderous cake ever.

Thanks, i did think about insertion of the barbie doll! Now all i have to do is hunt down my pyrex bowl
