Well, wine really. Can you recommend a nice red for about a tenner to take to a party?

I am a bit of an ignoramus when it comes to red, and let others order for me. Doesn't need to match anything in particular (apart from cigarettes) - easily quaffable is the only qualification.

most wines at £10 a bottle will be nice

depends if you want a full-bodied one or dryer one

Rioja is quite a popular one that most people like

bubblagirl · 20/07/2009 15:54

i think it was hardys or something along them lines dp mum bought it the other day was really nice

MadameCastafiore · 20/07/2009 15:55

I'd get a Rioja too - Campo Viejo (about £7.00) I think is the one DH buys me sometimes - he likes posh expensive ones that turn your teeth blue and make you go all shivery so we have to have seperate wine!

brimfull · 20/07/2009 16:00

wolf blass -shiraz is nice as well

Go to Oddbins / Waitrose and see what they have. There are good Riojas and bad Riojas...difficult to know which to recommend.

If it is for drinking on its own (not with food) I would probably get one at 12% not 14+% - but others may disagree.

MarthaFarquhar · 20/07/2009 16:05

will have a look for those, thanks. Anyone else have a fairly specific recommendation? Oh, and we've no Twatrose up here .

Louis Jadot Beaujolais Villages is good for under a tenner - sell it in tescos - alternatively have a look in oddbins or similar and see if you can get hold of any chapoutier - sometimes its on offer - v drinkable!

Sainsburys have a Roc de Lussac St Emillion on sale at £6.99 (normally £9.99)

It is splendid....

LouMacca · 20/07/2009 16:42

Oyster Bay Merlot from New Zealand is a beauty.

Usally £9/£10 but Tesco have had it on offer recently for £6.49

iggypiggy · 20/07/2009 16:46

Rioja is always a good one - and the campo veijo one is pretty good, and you can get them anywhere.

Or ask in the shop you buying it from - they may have a recommendation. Should be easy to get something nice for £10.

I tend to steer clear of the big branded mass produced ones - with the exception of the campo veijo - and sometimes wolf blass if I can't get anything nicer.

I have a wine expert in the family so my world of wine drinking has been transformed over the last few years!

ooh, cheers all. I am taking this list with me to Sainsbo's in the morning.

Madame Castafiore - I got the Campa Viejo reserva. Thanks for your advice.

And a nice sounding Chablis (can do whites by myself). Roll on Saturday.

Tesco St Joseph on offer at moment for £6 something..normally £12.99, very nice.

ManicMother7777 · 21/07/2009 16:10

Barolo £10.38 in Asda, gorgeous (the wine not Asda).

blowbroth · 21/07/2009 16:32

M/M7777, not here to recommend anything but I would say the best recommendation here is the Oyster Bay Merlot on offer at the moment according to LouMacca. I have been in the wine trade for too long a while now so know a thing or two.

blowbroth · 21/07/2009 16:34

Sorry , I mean MarthaFarquhar ofcourse! too much wine
