Hertfordshire foodies - need restaurant tip

DH and I have our anniversary coming up and I'm looking for somewhere lovely to go for a meal.

Previously we've been to Auberge du Lac at Brocket Hall, so I'm looking for something long those lines.

Any ideas?

This is lovely for lunch The Grove, Watford

We're the other side of the county sadly and it's a bit far for dinner. We're near Hertford / Welwyn Garden City, so anywhere within 20 miles of that I suppose. I'd heard that there was somewhere near Hitchin that's good but that's all I know!

Zodiac at Hanbury Manor in Ware is good.

vixma · 03/07/2009 19:45

What kind of food you into????

lizziemun · 04/07/2009 08:06

Novelli's in harpenden

This is the best "foodie" type restaurant I've come across so far...

here

The surroundings are probably not as fancy as Auberge du Lac but think the food is better.

The Bean Tree in Harpenden is really excellent. Novelli's is nice but I wouldn't call it foodie, it's more of a bistro. But the Bean Tree is proper foodie.

Done Zodiac (didn't have a great meal there though, which is a shame). Done Novelli's too.

Darcy's looks good - marinated kangaroo

Swedes - SOLD! Love the look of that. Thanks v. much.

Will bank Darcy's for another date I have in mind as he might moan a bit about the antipodean theme (can you tell that he takes food v. seriously!).

Just wanted to second the rec for Darcys although one day I am going to open a decent restaurant in WGC as it is seriously lacking...pizza anyone?

(Welwyn village has some great gastro pubs though, the Sunday lunch at the White Hart is fantastic)

Pennies, there is also the Cabinet at Reed, which is near Royston. It is v good.
