How can I make a dog cake?

DS who is 4 in a couple of weeks has announced that he wants a dog cake for his birthday. A black and white dog in fact. I want to have a go at making one myself but have only got as far as thinking about the body shape ie a swiss roll covered in roll out icing. (A sort of sausage dog type thing) Any ideas how to construct the head, legs, tail etc? Or should I just go for a dog's head shaped cake and if so how could I make it?
Sorry, but not feeling very creative/imaginative today!

why don't you make a big rectangle and then cut a basic dog shape out?

NomDePlume · 16/05/2005 14:44

OK, How about round cake covered in white icing. Get some of that roll out icing and colour some black and some pink. I think you just knead the food dye in.

Two black triangles for ears, black circle for muzzle, pink circle for nose, black eyes, half circle for mouth, with a pink tongue hanging out.

I'm sure I must have seen this somewhere before, I'll have to go google....

I made my dd a dog cake for her 5th birthday last weekend. Sadly scanner not working or I'd scan in a pic for you. Hers was brown and white with long floppy ears, like my sister's spaniel! (Well, OK, a bit like a spaniel... if you sort of screwed your eyes up and didn't look too closely!!!).

What I did was... use a round sponge cake for the main part of the head. Cut out two floppy ear shapes from another round sponge cake. (Mine were sort of shaped like inverted commas -really BIG ones - if that makes sense.) Then I cut two small semi circles out of the main 'head' cake towards the bottom and on either side to give him a sort of 'chin'. All I did then was cover the whole thing in ready-roll white icing and then pipe on eyes nose and mouth with this chocolate-in-a-bag stuff (ready to pipe) that I got in Tescos. I added brown patches on the ends of the ears. I did consider more artistic touches like adding another layer of cake to build up more of a 'snout' shape around the mouth, or giving him a red poky-out tongue, but artistic endeavour never was my strong point so I decided to quit while the going was good!

The swiss-roll sausage dog thing would be good too. My mum said she'd seen one like that, a 'Dougall' one in M&S... you might have a look there for inspiration!

Blues Clues cake but you culd change the colours

Blu · 16/05/2005 14:54

And if using ready-roll icing, but the stuff that is ready coloured and in sheets, it's a doddle to use.

Thanks so much everybody. You lot are so good. I've got loads of ideas now and I can't decide whether to do just a head or a whole dog. Musn't get too carried away and attempt anything too difficult for my novice cake making skills!

lol at thinking I wanted to make a cake for a dog. Brought back childhood memories of Blue Peter when they actually did make cakes for the animals birthdays.

hi shes doing well ,driving me mad!! hows the move?

HondaDream · 18/05/2005 08:33

How about this. Make a kennel, easy peasy two sguare sponges on top of each other cover with chocolate fingers. Make roof also using fingers. Put a door on with red roll out icing and DS name. Buy a plastic black and white dog and stick it in front of the kennel. you could even sprinkle the plate with gren coloured dessicated coconut for a grass effect. This will be so much easier than trying to make a dog and DS can keep the little plastic one. You may even be able to find one that is edible.

I spend hours making my kids cakes ( I am crap at it ) but I love doing it and they love em. I just think it is one of the nicest things you can do for them. I hate shop cakes, would never buy one. YUK.

Good Luck and hope you make something nice.
