I made plain scones for the first time - what did I do wrong?

I used Delia's basic recipe from the classic book of hers.

They came out looking more like mini victoria sponges than scones and TBH they tasted fine (quite good in fact ) - but they weren't really scone like! Just a bit too cake ish.

Can anyone give me a hint where I went wrong do you think?

did you use the right flour?

Don't over-mix. I rub in the butter with the flour and then add the other ingredients and stir just until they are all combined. But I use my mum's recipe, not Delia's and that is how she taught me to do it.

I like Mary Berry's scone recipe, tho always have to add a little more flour than suggested. and as procrastinatingparent says, dont over mix.

Thanks for your replies. It might not have helped that my DD was trying to help, bless her, with the mixing and stuff. Next time I'll wait till she's in bed!
