AM I BUGGERED???? Sons 3rd birthday tomorrow, only got plain flour for cake

I am baking my sons birthday cake, and have only gt plain flour for a victoria sponge. I know i need self raising but too late for that. Can't leave the kids home alone and pop to 24 hour tesco.....so..... i don't have any baking powder either, shouldi just makesure i fold plenty of air into it, or am i buggered???

mmmmmm I think you are buggered.

You need a raising agent, i don't think folding plenty of air into it will help!

Will nip off and consult my 1950's cake book from before self raising was invented (I think!) to see if anything else used.

If I was you I'd search for a recipe involving beaten egg white - something like that might be possible (though I've never tried it, just guessing!)

Is there no neighbour you could ask?

I am no expert but I can't see a cake working without self raising flour or baking powder - maybe someone with more knowledge would know

Can you nip out and get SR flour or baking powder first thing, and make the cake in the morning?

do you have any cool cookie cutters could you do cool cookies?

or could you cook it tomorrow morning?

Yeah you're buggered. Can you make a meringuey thing instead?

Or a cake made from a stack of pancakes layered with e.g. fruit?

As I thought, they mostly need flour and raising agent apart from ones that say bicarb of soda but sorry its really late and I need to fall into bed as the dc's have settled at a reasonable time for once!

Can you phone a neighbour for some SR flour?

just peering through the blinds to check if my friend over the road is still up but no such luck..

Think i may have to resign myself to the fact that the cake will not be ready for the morning. so glad i asked and didn't just bamboozle on with it.

Will take him on a fun birthday trip into town in the morning and get some. He'll have more fun decorating thecake with me too.

Have you a big tub of icecream in the freezer? If so whip it out, up end it on a plate or tray and decorate with whatever you have got (crushed flake, smarties, fruit)Back in freezer as quick as you can. Ice cream cake beats sponge cake hands down.

DS1 loved a trip like that... we went to the local sweetie shop and he was allowed to buy lots of different penny sweets,
when the cake was cooked I made up icing in bright colours and he poured it on and decorated it with as many sweets as he could fit.

You could make pancakes for breakfast and tell him he;s getting 2 cakes - breakfast cake plus birthday cake later on.
