Birthday cake- filling or not?

Im practicing my DD's birthday cake and have made a sponge with buttercream and jam filling. For the real thing I intend to ice it and decorate it in a number 1 shape.

Talking to my mum and shes says it doesnt need the filling as its having icing on it. But wouldnt that be abit odd having a slice of sponge with no filling?

So.... Filling or no filling?

filing (but just buttercream and no jam for me please).

I can't imagine eating a birthday cake without a filling. Jam and buttercream is required I feel.

I'd do a filling personally. Jam or buttercream or both.

Or mascarpone and jam went down well at DD's 4th - not so sickly as buttercream (for the grown-ups).
