Need to find something savoury for DD2 to cook and thought of cheese straws but I don't know how to make them!

Does anyone have a tried and tested recipe?

TIA.

In the past I have used bought shortcrust pastry, rolled it out, sprinkled on cheese, folded it up in thirds, rolled, sprinkled, folded etc etc, until I felt there was enough cheese in the pastry, then rolled and cut into straws - and they did taste very nice indeed.

If you wanted to be less lazy than me you could make your own shortcrust pastry:

8oz plain flour
4oz fat (all lard or half and half lard and butter)
A pinch of salt
Cold water.

Rub the fat into the flour and salt until it resembles breadcrumbs, then gradually add the cold water, mixing until it forms a dough. Turn out and knead briefly, then use as above.

190°C: 375°F: Gas 5 or 220°C: 425°F: Gas 7 depending on how thick you roll it out, and what you use it for. Cheese straws won't take long to cook - I would guess 10 minutes.

I hope this helps.

That's brilliant - thank you so much. Will add shortcrust pastry to the shopping list then !
