Help - parents coming for dinner tomorrow!

My parents are coming for dinner tomorrow, we don't have them over often and my mum is an excellent cook where I'm more student cook than haute cuisine! Can anyone suggest ideas for main and dessert? Meant to be sunny here tomorrow (in Scotland so this is rare!)so want to spend as much time as possible in the garden rather than the kitchen - but still make an effort!

what kind of thing are you thinking of?

dessert can be posh ice cream and or cheese and crackers?

home-made but fairly simple dessert - I did a no-bake cheese cake last tme - that kind of thing - thanks! Like the idea of adding cheese and crackers!

keep it simple - new potatoes and salad (with a good homemade dressing), salmon maybe? can do some roasted asparagus to make it all seem a bit more dressed up.

I like the idea of lemon tart and raspberries for pud. Trifle is dead easy and always looks/tastes impressive. or what about that lovely Scottish oats, raspberries and cream thing that I've forgotten the name of?

Caramelised onion quiche could be good instead of the salmon and v easy to make.

Cranachan!

All sounds good - unfortunately I once made Eton mess using M&S meringues (Nigella's idea) and my mum was most unimpressed (I know I should never have let slip!) - think it's a generation thing. Will try M&S lemon tart with rasps next time anyone else is round as it sounds delicious. I really should have folks round more often as I always end up enjoying it!
