Am meant to be making some for a starter tonight, and haven't bought a mat-is there anything I can use instead? Argh!

See, my mother's mad and would suggest bubble wrap or something, but I think if you have nothing approximating the mat there's little point sellotaping barbeque skewers together at this stage.

Perhaps baking paper just to hold it together, although it won't 'tighten' up as much?

Some ideas here

I think you could do it by hand, I make them often and don't always use a mat.

Do you have any bamboo roller blinds in your house?

A piece of corrogated card rolled up a few times to soften it will work. A few layers of tinfoil will be a good last resort (6 ish)
