Just wondered how many people do.

no

I love cereal and so does DS

emkana · 18/05/2009 22:02

I only buy ones which are low in salt, so I wouldn't buy Rice Krispies or cornflakes

We have Weetabix, shredded wheat, Oatiflakes, Weetos

Penthesileia · 18/05/2009 22:02

Yes, I do. And too sugary too, I find.

Actually, correction: I occasionally buy Waitrose own all bran type cereal, which is much less salty than Kellogg's.

and it pissed me off when they reduced the salt in cornflakes. Now they taste like nothing and I have to either add a little salt or add honey or sugar.

Overmydeadbody · 18/05/2009 22:04

and when I make porridge, I add salt in mine (but not DS's) as ell as sweetening it.

Life is too short. There is no conclusive evidence that high salt diets increases any risk to health in adults.

pointydog · 18/05/2009 22:04

so what cereals are too salty? And how salty is too salty, as a general rule?

OP posts:
Penthesileia · 18/05/2009 22:04

LOL @ Overmydeadbody! I love the way you're swimming against the tide here!

Overmydeadbody · 18/05/2009 22:04

I like salt

pointydog · 18/05/2009 22:05

what is it salt does to the body?

OP posts:
moondog · 18/05/2009 22:05

No
I avoid buying them because charging a couple of quid for a handful of dust is a crime.

Porridge all the way chez Moondog.

Penthesileia · 18/05/2009 22:05

I also make porridge with salt and then add golden syrup.

pointydog · 18/05/2009 22:06

overpriced, yes. Another example of Bad Food Britain, then? The shite we eat?

OP posts:
Overmydeadbody · 18/05/2009 22:07

slat doesn't do anything permenant to the body, but it is essential for all cells to function.

theyoungvisiter · 18/05/2009 22:07

I avoid salty cereals. I don't mind eating salty food, but I dislike "hidden salt" in things like biscuits, cereals etc. They don't need them IMO, it just buggers up your palate.

I either eat no salt cereals (like muesli, ready brek etc) or else get lower salt varieties of the old favourites. Sainsburys own brand tend to be much lower in salt than the big names, for some reason.

Overmydeadbody · 18/05/2009 22:07

Pent that is the right way to make porridge!

Some people leave out the salt. Wierdos

Penthesileia · 18/05/2009 22:08

I dunno. There are probably worse things than breakfast cereal. I think the problem with it is that the recommended portion is so small - people can easily eat many more calories & consume more salt/sugar than they realise. If you measure out a 40g portion, it's tiny.

LOL @ Bad Food Britain! Are you on the warpath?

Penthesileia · 18/05/2009 22:09

I now have a terrible urge to eat porridge.

Ivykaty44 · 18/05/2009 22:09

Porridge and museli mix - I do this to make it go further but it reduces the salt at the same time.

Get salt free butter, it taste lovely.

Salt helps to build cholestral, but not the good ones.

It also helps to preserve the body and in 2000 years time you will be dug up and still be in one piece if you have too much salt in your diet

Overmydeadbody · 18/05/2009 22:10

youngvisitor I am proud of my buggered up palate and will continue to add salt to my biscuits and cakes too

The worst thing is going to someone's house for dinner and tey haven't even added salt to the cooking water for the pasta or rice, and then there's no salt on the table either. Everything just tastes of nothing then.

Thunderduck · 18/05/2009 22:10

Sweet porridge is just wrong. A pinch of salt is all that's required.

pointydog · 18/05/2009 22:11

I don't think salt buggers up you r palate. Salt is quite a nice taste in biscuits and cereal. I'm just not sure if it's a bad thing. I can see it's not nutritionally great.

bollox Ivy. Or was that a joke?

(apart from the mixing muisli with oats, I do this too)

pointydog · 18/05/2009 22:11

I like salted butter. Don;t like unsalted at all.
