I live abroad but am coming back to the UK next week. Can I load up my suitcase with cheddar and freeze it when I get back home? If so, do you have to defrost it or can you grate it from frozen?

I have often frozen grated cheddar without problems. Expect you can freeze blocks, but allow plenty of time to defrost in fridge.

easiest to freeze it grated

freeze it grated or freeze it and grate it frozen.

Yes you can.
It's very crumbly when you defrost it but tastes the same.
My local Leclerc sells Wykes Farm 'cheddar fermier' which is proper cheddar rather than the orange plastic usually sold in France.
