Rumtopf: Anyone any tips

I made Rumtopf quite dissastrously (spell !?) 3 years ago and feel the urge to do one this year.

I've heard that you shouldn't use a glass jar !?
What qty of fruit to sugar ?
Also which and how much Rum to use...
Any tips appreciated

I have done it in a kilner jar, but you have to keep it in the dark. I just covered the friut and sugar with Rum......actually I think I used vodka instead. Can't remeber how much sugar sorry,

a friends mum used to make this,using vodka,fruit and sugar,i remember being presented with one in a kilner jar,i also remember 4 of us polishing it off in one afternoon and terrible drunken consequences.just the thought of it makes me feel v pale and unwell,but i'm sure you're far more sensible.
