freezing asparagus?

anyone tried this? I've heard it's possible if you blanch it first but not sure how well it defrosts. Would love to just eat it in season, but love it so much. Refuse to buy tasteless Peruvian stuff in dead of winter.

I read something in a magazine the other day that suggested blanching and pureeing and using in risottos or soups later. The point was made that freezing kills texture so trying to freeze whole and eat whole doesn't work.
