Best way to cut up a mango?

I (perhaps foolishly) bought two mangoes in Tesco from the 'quick it's nearly out of date' area.

I don't know how to cut up a mango. I always make a big mess. I think it's because there's nto discernable stone, just a sort of hard area in the middle. Any tips please?

With this

Some of what they sell you can live without but this is worth it. My DCs love mango and it is a bonus it is full of Vit A (good for the eyes) and this thing makes it a whole lot less messy.

For tonight I would cut it sort of round the stone in the middle - like the photo - and then slice it across both ways into squares, on the fruit bit, then flip it out and the squares will come off provided you have cut right down to the skin. HTH.

Here's what I do. Slice all the way round the fat edge with a sharp knife, as if it were a slightly flattened avocado. Then slide the knife in and feel around the stone - you'll end up with two halves, one with the stone in. Try to slide the knife round that too, to get it out. Then cross-hatch the flesh of the two halves and push the skin inside out, so they become hedgehogs. Scoff, kicking your arms, or cut the cubes off to put in whatever you are doing with them. Gnaw the stone.

There's a really easy and mess free way, but I'm not sure I can describe it. I'll try . . .

Basically aim to chop your mango into three with the skin on - like in the image above, but done by knife. It's easy if you stand the mango upright and work out where the stone is. Then just slide the knife down along the edge of the stone, so that you have 3 sections - the middle one has the stone in.

Take one of the stone free pieces and hold it, skin down in the palm of your hand. Use a sharpish knife and slice up and down and side to side, so that you make a grid in it, reaching to, but not pressing hard enough to cut through, the skin (or through your hand behind it). The cubes you are cutting should be about 1.5 cms across.

Then push in the middle of the skin and your convex shape becomes concave - you are then able to run the knife over the inside of the skin and neatly chop off the cubes.

Repeat for the other piece without a stone in it and then simply peel off the little bit of skin on the stone piece. That one is for you - you bite/suck the mango flesh off from around the stone - cook's treat.

You get loads of mango off this way and should get almost none on your hands, until you gorge yourself on the stone piece!

HTH Enjoy

I don't think I understand 'kicking your arms' usedtoreadbooks.

Licking my arms is usually what I have to do if I attempt to deconstruct a mango

Thanks for the video norktastic, youtube has everything! (I think mine is squishier than his)

Just for Trill

TrillianAstra · 12/05/2009 17:13

But then I would need to buy a slow-cooker...

I saw cheapy ones in Tesco today. So tempting. But at the moment I am at home all day and thmell of stuff slowly cooking might drive me mad with hunger.

(thanks for typing all that out by the way notquite)

  1. get undressed.
  2. Run bath
  3. take mango into bath.
  4. eat mango.
TrillianAstra · 12/05/2009 17:27

The mango is cut. Thanks all! Mission accomplished

Trillian - you didn't come back to the star trek thread to discuss the alternative reality issue with me....

pointydog · 12/05/2009 17:30

Just like bakergirl. Then suck and slaver over the stone.

TrillianAstra · 12/05/2009 17:30

Sorry will come now, it got caught up in suitability for children or something and I drifed away.

BlingDreaming · 12/05/2009 17:33

Yes, I forgot for a while myself. Same reason.

TrillianAstra · 12/05/2009 17:38

Ok done it. On the correct thread not here just in case other geeks want to come join us - they won;t be looking for a discussion of time travel on a mango thread

Sorry about kicking arms. That's DD's job.

TrillianAstra · 12/05/2009 18:23

Was it licking? I really wasn't sure! Couldn't figure it out at all to begin with

That's what my grandfather always said BlingDreaming!

BlingDreaming · 13/05/2009 09:12

It's my mum's strategy - bath or swimming pools for mangos. Her father used to do it for her and her sister and then make toys out of the stones.
