Brownies - where am I going wrong?

I am fed up with putting my failures in the bin. The problem is that they are cooked (or even overdone) around the edge but the middle is still raw. I know they are supposed to be gooey but this is not right. The top looks cooked - how do I get them cooked through without burning the top & edges. I use a fan oven if that is relevant. I am an experienced baker and can do most stuff without difficulty. Help please!

sounds like oven is too hot.

The skewer should stil have some batter on it when you insert it in the middle too, don't overcook them.

a 9"x13" tray takes approx 55mins at 170 in my oven (which is a bit slow). Let them cool completely in the pan. I always cut the crusty bit off the edges then slice them up. They will be gooey and stick to the knife, but i haven't poisoned anyone yet with them. The idea is they cool to doneness. Don't be tempted to try and cut them while they are warm, else you'll just end up with a big chocolaty mess. Hth .

Agree with thrifty.

make sure your tray is exactly the right size for your recipe. cook on non-fan oven if poss. Allow to cool completely before cutting. Don't expect them to look cooked inside - the goo is the idea. good luck.

is your tin too deep?
turn oven down a touch.

Thanks for the tips - will have another go with oven turned down and cook a bit longer. I'm probably taking them out of the tin too soon too.
