Bearing in mind I am trying to budget a little.

Its DSs birthday and am having BBQ at my mums,

don't want the heap of burnt sausages and burgers we usually have

Fillet steak
Nice coleslaw
Yummy kebab thingies with chicken and red peppers
Sausages made with real meat
Brilliant salads - at least three - including a rice salad and a green salad
Good dressings

Well you did ask

i would expect to see the hosts with a smile on their faces, and a welcoming attitude
i would expect to see lots of food. and the smile offering it up.
a vegetarian option if any vegitarians are expected, but not otherwise.
salad, lots of it.
but the main thing is the smile and the welcome

cous cous is really cheep. I cook some courgette, tomatoes, mushrooms, red onions, red peppers and mixed herbs in a pan then add them to the cooked cous cous with a dollop of pesto and a hand full of grated cheese. doesnt cost much and tastes yummy!

as others have suggested home made salads are nice like coleslaw and potatoe salads, a selection of leaves. You could also make a nice salsa, its really easy.

tip go to tesco on a sunday afternoon an hour or so before they close or on a week night in the evening and pick up some bargains. They have loads of reduced stuff like the "tesco finest" sausages etc which are normally expencive but have money off because they need to be used..... stick them in the freezer and get them out on the morning of the bbq...... bargain, nice sausages but much cheeper!

I like sardines and mackerel on the bbq... ASDA had half a mackerel on a skewer, marinated in chilli for £1. They looked good...easy to do.

lamb or pork chops
steak
corn on the cobs done on the bbq
sardines
ribs

Oh and I do the same as themildmanneredjanitor but instead of boiling the chicken, I put them in the oven for a short while to start them off.

I would do LOTS of one or two things rather than loads of little bits of everything.

And I would want a huge jug of cold Pimms

And a hunky waiter with his shirt off

OverMyDeadBody - we also do your banana idea, but before closing the wrapping I slosh in a glug of grand marnier, or tia maria, or cointreau, or brandy or... or....

Can of lentils with chopped spring onion, feta cheese and lemony dressing.

Crusty bread.

I am very disappointed by BBQs without sausages.

Relishes and sauces are very important.

no no no...cook bananas in their skins then peel into a bowl, add brown sugar, rum and cream...mmmm....
