Small children and barbaques vaguely heard from somewhere that they shouldn't have them

Is that true? Not sure where I heard it from but I'm sure I've read it somewhere. My mum said she heard it on bbc breakfast the other week that they shouldn't because it is cancergenic (can't spell it sorry!) Not sure if that is true thought it was more to do with food poisoning concerns. Anyway really hoping all this isn't the case as I LOVE bbqs!!!

I don't think I would want BBQ food if it was burnt!
I can't see why it should be a problem if it is properly cooked-you can just as easily burn it if you grill or bake in the oven.

Overmydeadbody · 02/05/2009 22:31

sail05 as long as the food is bbqed properly i.e. not burnt I don't see why it should be a problem.

lottiebunny · 03/05/2009 12:32

Even if its not burnt the food will still have particles from the coals all over it, which is what gives bbq food that lovely smokey flavour. This is the carcinogenic stuff.

Anything thats been blackened will have carcinogenic properties. Even my beloved slightly overdone toast.

Mind you these days everything seems to cause cancer.

Kbear · 03/05/2009 12:44

Right, everyone stop breathing right now - the fumes will kill you if the BBQ doesn't.

Don't you have more to worry about than a BBQ burger?

spicemonster · 03/05/2009 12:46

Incidentally that article isn't about particles from the coals - it's about cooking the meat until it's really well done - grilling or frying is no different from barbecuing.

If barbecued food gave you pancreatic cancer, there would be a much higher incidence of it in Australia and as far as I know, no such link has been made.

I'm taking my 2 YO DS to a barbecue this afternoon. I am not remotely worried about it

mosschops30 · 03/05/2009 18:11

yes I was taking the piss, so what? I really dont care what you think about my life and parenting anymore than you should care about my opinions on yours!
If you dont like people making comments, best you stay away from MN or prepare to be upset a lot

MintyyAeroEgg · 03/05/2009 19:14

Am not in any way "upset" Mosschops. But I'm not prepared to stand back and allow you to be so fucking insulting.

Am not judging you on your parenting or your life. Am just taking you up on your silly bitchy barbed comments towards me.

FAQinglovely · 03/05/2009 19:18

well if it's really really bad for you Southern African (Botswana, Namibia, Zim, South Africa etc) and Australian (first countries I can think of that love their BBQ's ) children should have very high rates of cancer

Mind you they don't rush them like people tend to do here in the UK - braii will be lit hours before food is started cooking on it so there's no flames to blackened the meat

Kbear · 03/05/2009 19:28

FAQ - that is probably because MEN tend to take over the BBQ here and rush to put the food on even though their wives say "wait til the flames die down dear". It's the caveman in them. they must have FIRE!!

UGG

LOL

MaureenMLove · 03/05/2009 20:50

I can catagorically say my DH never rishes a barbie! In fact, we have to speed him up at times, because we're all starving? Am I right Kbear or am I right?

FAQinglovely · 03/05/2009 20:56

lol Kbear so true - so in Zim where they're used to fire - it's "mmm more Castle - oops Braii has been ready for 2hrs hours while we drank those 2 cases of Castle better get the food on"

Kbear · 03/05/2009 21:04

MO, your DH is the exception to the rule I'll give you that.

woodstock3 · 04/05/2009 15:16

burnt anything is potentially VERY VERY SLIGHTLY carcinogenic. ie if your dc ate barbecue daily for ever, it would probably elevate their risk of cancer, but wouldn't necessarily mean they would get it - and the odd blooming sausage is never going to kill anyone.
a bbq is no more dangerous than having a mother like mine who always burnt the toast
