Long shot this, I have 2 guests staying later this month who are vegans, happy with porridge made with water but what else can I get in to feed them (only breakfasts) I always have rice/soya milk and dairy free spread as DS dairy free. Do i admit the bread I make has milk powder in?

Can't you make some without? It's not vital - just softens the crust.

FiveGoMadInDorset · 01/05/2009 20:52

Can do that, didn't realise that is all it did and I guess can use oil instead of butter.

potato cakes (work fine with just grated potato) topped with sauteed mushrooms and grilled tomatoes

Kathyis6incheshigh · 01/05/2009 20:53

Yes absolutely, oil will be fine.

FiveGoMadInDorset · 01/05/2009 20:54

Thanks Kathy.

Potato cakes sound good as well, will email them tomorrow with ideas.

Thank you.

I use soya milk instead of milk powder in my bread maker...
(do they have their porridge with water it must taste better with soya/rice milk)...

FrannyandZooey · 01/05/2009 20:57

most cereals are ok, except muesli which often has milk powder
soya yogurt and fruit / nuts / seeds?

thisisyesterday · 01/05/2009 20:58

cereal with milk substitute
toast with pure spread and toppings
fresh fruit

if you google vegan with a vengeance pancakes you'll get a fabby vegan pancake recipe which i can highly recommend (my entire family love them)

rumdontbotherreplyingmum · 01/05/2009 20:58

I also use dairy free spread in the bread maker instead of butter...
are potato cakes the same as hash browns..

FiveGoMadInDorset · 01/05/2009 20:59

I make my own granola with oats, honey, maple syrup, vanilla and seeds and fruit, so hoping that will be OK as well.

Do you normally offer a full English? If you would like to replicate that you can have scrambled tofu (basically mushed up and fried, well seasoned including paprika), fried Tempeh (sliced and fried until charred and crispy with a splash of soy sauce), plus all the usual, beans, grilled tomatoes, oily grilled mushrooms....you will get in all the vegan guidebooks with that! (Ae you a B+B?)

There are also recipes for vegan pancakes on te web which are lovely. Maple syrup, not honey!

FiveGoMadInDorset · 01/05/2009 21:00

Thank you all, they are paying good money to stay and just didn't want to fob them off with a bad and uninspiring breakfast.

OP posts:
BeehiveBaby · 01/05/2009 21:00

No honey!

FiveGoMadInDorset · 01/05/2009 21:01

Will google pancakes (they are American so hopefully will appreciate that).

OP posts:
thisisyesterday · 01/05/2009 21:01

yup, honey is not vegan

FiveGoMadInDorset · 01/05/2009 21:02

And thank you for educating me

OP posts:
FrannyandZooey · 01/05/2009 21:03

oh sorry, i thought they were 'just' friends
you can get vegan sausages - redwood ones from holland and barrett are good
i would do scrambled tofu as mentioned earlier - if you put turmeric in it goes yellow which looks nicer than greyish white

honey would be a problem for many vegans so do check
how about different breads - rye bread - warm rolls - poppyseed bread - etc

thisisyesterday · 01/05/2009 21:04

here just remembered I posted the recipe on here before

thisisyesterday · 01/05/2009 21:05

it makes thick american style pancakes, so we tend to do lots of smallish ones.
worth experimenting with in advance

FiveGoMadInDorset · 01/05/2009 21:05

Beehive and Franny that sounds perfect will email them all options so that they can choose and then will go get.

Thank you once again.

I am very impressed....do you advertise on here?

FiveGoMadInDorset · 01/05/2009 21:08

Not yet, we are doing well this year despite the credit crunch, but renovating and expanding for next year so will do then.

OP posts:
Nighbynight · 01/05/2009 21:23

Scones/soda bread (no milk, obv) + vegan spread + jam?

Five, they will love you if they eat well! When I had a restricted diet (allergies) during my twenties, I usually just went without rather than ask for anything extra. Got some nasty comments in a b+b once.

FiveGoMadInDorset · 01/05/2009 21:48

If we get notice then more than happy to accommodate.
