Best store-bought items for a school cake sale?

I'm supposed to be baking fairy cakes for the cake sale tomorrow, but have just come down with a bad cold and can't face anything more than lying on the sofa or sitting at my desk.

Any suggestions on what I should buy instead? Esp in terms of

  • not costing more than it will sell for
  • something nice that people will want to buy

Thanks!

Could you buy packet brownie mix and make cupcakes with those (sprinkles on the top?)

Is that very sad?!

Oh - just make a donation and be done with it!

Buy some cheap plain fairy cakes and cover them with chocolate cake covering . I was amazed at how well these sold!

Buy ready made cup cakes from supermarket (about £1 for £12) then put white icing and a smartie on each. Takes about 3 minutes

Do you have a Somerfields nearby...ours sells homemade style buns & cakes....just put them on a paper plate & cover.(not that I do that!!!!!)

those fairy cakes with icing on - fairly cheap in any supermarket. They always go down well at out school

Hangingbellyofbabylon · 30/04/2009 22:21

yuk.. I'd rather not bring anything than shop-bought. I've been making my chocolate-orange muffins for our cake sale tomorrow and I just know that they'll be rubbing shoulders with those common foamy tasting super-market fairy cakes.

If you're ill and can't face baking I just wouldn't bother in this instance.

Thanks for that Nigella

if they sell, then what's the issue?

it'a cake sale to raise money, not a country fair with a prize for the best and most smug mummy

Hangingbellyofbabylon · 01/05/2009 17:38

ooh, the best and most smug mummy - I thank you. Well my beautiful home-made cakes were as predicted laid out on plates with all the shop bought tat, not even fairy cakes but mini rolls and jam tarts etc . Standards are dropping.. .
