What angle should I be piping stars at?

Am still trying to perfect piped buttercream stars but seem to be managing to smudge quite a few of them! Is there a specific way to hold the piping bag or angle to hold it at so I don't end up smudging them?

Push down everso slightly and then withdraw quickly and upwards.

so do it straight, rather than at an angle?
