ideas for a fire engine cake

Has anyone been successful in making a fire engine cake? If so, please share your tips and ideas. There was a design in (whisper it) the Daily Mail a few weeks ago, but are there any other proven approaches?!

You need SoMuchToBits as she made a fab one for her DS a couple of years ago. The fire engine was on the top of the cake rather than it being a fire engine shape IIRC.

The picture of the cake is on her profile if you want to see it!

Thanks Petal

Mine was just a picture of a fire engine on a rectangular cake though. I have never made a fire engine-shaped cake. I'm sure there was a thread about this a while back though, because that's when I posted my picture onto my profile. I'll see if I can find it.

The other thread is here - Boogiewoogie had a great recipe for a 3D one.

We cheated and used picturethatcake which had a Fireman Sam icing cake topper here

A friend made a fab Fireman Sam fire engine cake for her DS - used licqurich (sp?!) wheels for the wheels and used licqurich shoestring things for a ladder....then licqurich allsorts rounds and jelly's for the headlights and had a square-ish cake with the basic fire engine shape and then covered in red icing and white icing for windows, the front grill and the side panel where the water pumps are. Wish I had a pic to show you.

cadburys fingers for the ladder (normal ones for the main bit and the mini ones for the rungs)
marshmallows make good flashing lights on top/headlights
those cigar-shaped wafery biscuits for the water hose

made a fireman sam one for ds 3rd birthday - basically copied his engine. made a 9" square chocolate cake, cut it in half then put piece on top to make front of engine , 2 strips down sides, so that there was a space in middle to put in ladder/platform thing - this gave basic shape - covered in red fondant, then yellow and grey fondant to make ladder, platform. White for windows, grey, silvered for shutters. - pics on profile - tbh the pics aren't great - his birthday is 27th Dec so made it that morning and took pics before it dried properly. It looked much better an hour later when the shine from the wet bits wasn't reflecting the camera flash!
