I'm sure I've seen recipes which have cheese in but don't use suet.

You can buy veggie suet if it's that reason that makes you want to omit the suet.
Alternatively, make a cobbler and you get the same sort of effect with nice crumbly bits to eat with a casserole but without suet and just an easy cobbler.

ok, thanks. if i did flour , water, baking powder and some cheese and herbs, do you think that would work, or do you have to have some fat in there?

You could try that - they might not be as fluffy as dumplings with suet but it probably wouldn't be far off...

Cobbler recipe - hold on a tick....(goes to rifle through the mountains of books)

Is it because you are vegetarian? If so, you can get veggie suet which is just as good.

Cobbler topping:

125gr SR flour
pinch of salt

the rub in with fingertips 35g butter
(this is when you'd add 25g sugar if you're making a fruit cobbler)

Lightly mix together 2tbsp lightly mixed egg and 2 tbsp milk
stir this into the dry ingredients and mix to soft scone dough in the bowl
Turn out onto lightly floured board
pat out to 1cm depth (approx) and you should be able to get 6-7 rounds with a cutter

that;s perfect, thank you

thank you everyone x

I might make one too now! Hope it works out (I hasten to add I've not actually made that recipe but it comes from a cookbook I had as a child so should be pretty foolproof)
