Fish Pie question

alittlebitshy · 20/04/2009 10:55

Am intending to make fish pie based on a recipe a friend we stayed with last week used. mmm.

My only query is: do i put cheese on top of the mash or not? Am not sure if that's what is done or if it's best not to?!

tia.

only if you want to

Seriously - with or without cheese is valid.

ok - will see how frustrated i am by them (am usually grimacing at the thought of all the pans that need washing - hence i rarely make things like lasagne and fish pie where multiple processes go on at once ).

I've heard of people putting crushed crisps on top of mash - never tried it myself because we usually have fish pie as sloppy easy to eat comfort food - but perhaps you could crush cheese and onion crisps?? lol
I used to pre-cook fish but now I bung it in raw, poor sauce over (can be bought if easier for you) and pile on mash, but obviously it needs cooking for longer that way.
Hope you enjoy it anyway

If the fish is in a cheese sauce, then cheesey mash is a bit of an overload surely? (Says the woman who has eaten it 3 nights running now as DD and Dh turned their noses up at it )

In the end I didn't have cheese. Either in sauce or on top. It was yummy

Have to say, I'm not sure about a fish/cheese combination - DH (king of the fishy pie in our house ), just does a white sauce made with the milk the fish has poached in.

I put cheese on top but not in sauce.

I poach smoked haddock in milk. Flake it, add flaked cod, king prawns and finely diced shallots, make a sauce with a little of the milk used to poach fish and cream . Pour over fish top with mash then grates cheese and serve with peas (yummy).

I did: smoked haddock, cod and a bit of coley (in freezer left from last fish pie dh made) - cooked in milk, then flaked it, added prawns. made white saunce with the reserved milk and an extra half pint, poured sauce on, put layer of leeks to stop mash sinking so much, then put the mash on top. was yummy (friend did last week) but in future i'll lightly steam the leeks first as they were a bit too firm ....

Mine is: mashed potato and carrots for the topping, over cod or coley with a bit of onion, in white sauce, with a good handful of frozen sweetcorn tossed into the white sauce before putting the mash on top.

I crush up some crisps and sprinkle them and grated cheese on top. It's lovely.

I put cheese on if I've used smoked fish. Not of I've used unsmoked. Did friend use it?
