Plain flour - go on, what is the diffence between 'basics' and the other brand

doing online shop.

Need plain flour, Sainsburys Basics is 43p a kg, their other own brand is 75p.

Now I haven't bought big name flour in years, but vacillate between basics and standard own brand. I can't tell any difference, can anyone else ?

I only ever use 'value' brand. I think if someone was able to tell the difference betwee types of flour i would be inclined to tell them to get out more

Thinner paper bag, I think. Tears more easily - but I only get small bags at a time so I'm not too fussed.

I stopped buying the fancy Italian 00 type about three years ago and have had no complaints

Nothing.

Have switched to Sainsbo's basic flour and it has been fine.

Goober · 17/04/2009 19:36

I use it, it's fine. Probably not sieved so much as other brand.

nannyL · 17/04/2009 20:35

agree other than the bag itself the flour is impossible to notice the difference!

oopsacoconut · 17/04/2009 20:36

The packet is not so colourful! bake exactly the same.

I switched to basic/value level a while ago and dont notice any difference - except in the price!

FAQinglovely · 17/04/2009 21:46

can't say I've noticed a difference - I mainly use my to make a roux for sauces - and works just fine and dandy

I make everything from sourdough bread to scones to pastry with basic flour with no probs
