Why do my eggs taste like fish?

The box says the hens were fed a vegetarian diet

packed in a bag with fish on the way home?

fish in the fridge?

thumbwitch · 14/04/2009 18:54

I had a couple of eggs in a box recently that stank of fish - one of them so badly that we just threw it out; the other one I threw after cracking it and the yolk was pretty much disintegrated.

If it's not because they're off, then it could be that the hens have been fed on fishmeal - remember some people still consider fish to be part of a vegetarian diet!

SuperBunny · 14/04/2009 18:57

No fish in our house - we're veggie so isn't that. Hadn't considered that fishmeal might be acceptable for vegetarian hens. I am sure the eggs aren't off but they are too revolting to cook with. Yuck.

They do taste fishy if they have been fed fishmeal. However, any farmer claiming they have been fed a veggie diet will get their fingers rapped if they are found to have been using fishmeal. It could just be a few duffers got stuck in the wrong box at the processing plant. If it keeps happening, I'd return them to the shop though.

morningpaper · 14/04/2009 19:04

they are probably OFF

SuperBunny · 14/04/2009 19:21

I'm in the US where rules are different and much more lenient so it is quite possible that my veggie hens were fed fish.

Or they might possibly be off but they shouldn't be

I want my own hens.

for some reason when I saw the title I wondered how on earth you knew what your eggs tasted like.

GentleOtter · 14/04/2009 19:31

Eggs should not taste or smell of anything. They were possibly turning a bit off.
Layers pellets, grains etc do not contain fishmeal normally although God knows what battery or barn hens are fed with.

CKelpie · 14/04/2009 19:31

I bought some eggs a while back that said they were rich in Omega 3 (fish oil) and they tasted fishy to me.

I have no idea how they enhance the omega 3 but I would rather do without. Yuk!

TrillianAstra · 14/04/2009 19:33

Eggs should taste/smell of something Otter, they should taste/smell of eggs!

It's caviar.

GentleOtter · 14/04/2009 19:38

Ok from NZ but does contain fishmeal

DuffyFluckling · 14/04/2009 19:38

I've often heard that battery eggs taste fishy.

GentleOtter · 14/04/2009 19:41

several reasons why the eggs tasted fishy

TrillianAstra · 14/04/2009 19:44

Could this be the reason?

SuperBunny · 15/04/2009 00:58

Oh yuck. It's all yuck. Especially Trillian's

I don't much like eggs as it is but this has put me right off. Bleurgh.

I am now wondering what my own eggs would taste like but am obviously not curious enough to find out.
