Making DS1 a birthday cake. How do i get it to cook with a fairly flat top?

or do i just have to slice it acroos to level it?
I have a icing cake topper to put on the top of it!

if its a sponge i turn them upside down to cool and you can ice that side i think

I did the same as morning sun. It worked well and I am not a baker (although I was very proud of DS first birthday cake at the time)

Turn in out onto a cooling rack, that'll help it to flatten down a bit, but as others have said, just ice the bottom.

I don't think it would have worked on the chocolate cake i made last week though. It looked more like a volcano lol!

I always carefully slice off the top and then eat it.

also when you put the mixture in the tin,smooth it flat and ever so slightly concave in the middle as it rises more in the middle
