Have you started it yet? Is it looking good if you have?

How spooky is that - was just going to start a thread with the title "Lucysmam - have a look at my cake"

Have taken pictures - can you see it?

I made the cake yesterday afternoon. Did the buttercream this morning. The boys and I went out for our lunch (DH away all weekend) and from about 1.30 I have been beavering away.

Am so chuffed.

oooh, he looks great! What a first attempt!

Are you pleased with it? (of course you are, daft question )

Are you going to do it for your dads birthday now, since it looks so good?

I'll be round in about half an hour, save me some....

Thanks ladies

Yes, I am going to do another one for my Dad's birthday. Funny thing was, my mum rang whilst I was in the middle of decorating it and she asked what I was doing. I sort of told a little white lie and said I was making a victoria sponge. If I had said that it was a trial run for dad, she would not be able to keep the secret and she would tell him.

It'll be a lovely surprise for him. It looks so neat compared to my efforts!

I am pretty pleased with myself.

I really didn't have any distractions though so was able to concentrate. My boys are old enough to do their own stuff (one plays out all of the time and the other is either on his laptop/i-pod/wii or if he is really bored will go out!).

What I didn't anticipate was though how long it takes to get all the colours kneeded into each bit of icing and how much paste it took to go from white to black and white to dark green. I suppose next time I will know to dollop a lot more in at the beginning.

lucysmam · 04/04/2009 22:02

Good point! Mine likes to get under my feet, nick the hand whisk, munch offcuts of icing & generally be a pita when I'm doing something

It takes ages mixing the colours into the icing doesn't it! I didn't expect it to take so long either, but it's worth the hard work in the end
