he loves trains, cars, teddy bears, usual stuff and hasa mother who can't bake. I also have one round cake tin. May be able to get a sandwich tin or fairy cake cups, but nothing else really. any ideas? could i make a mountain cake out of cupcakes and put a bear on it (he keeps singin the bear went over the mountain. ) but how would i do a bear???

Best idea is simple chocolate/victoria sponge cake then get some characters that he likes and put them on the cake eg Thomas the Tank engine on chocolate finger train track or oy cars on a road made of smarties ('glue' the cars on with icing) He'll be thrilled with the 'toy' part of the cake and it should look effective too.

do a spider web. ds1 had it for his 4th birthday and it went down well.
just make a round cake (ours was choc), ice it and then use a diff colour icing to make the web.
you just do the icing in circles on the top and then drag a cocktail stick through them from the centre to the edge iyswim:?
make spiders from marshmallows and licquorice shoelaces

I did a 'train' cake as described by K&P'sLoveChild. Just iced some train tracks on a round cake and stuck a couple of trains from DS's IKEA trainset. This was for his 2nd birthday and he was made up with it. This year I plan to pull off a similar trick with some plastic dinosaurs...

the train tracks are a really lovely idea, and i think even i could manage that! thank you! I was having nightmares of moulded cake pans and three dimensional cakes.
