Defrosted chicken question

tkband3 · 31/03/2009 11:23

I defrosted some chicken yesterday which was meant to be for dinner yesterday but I ended up at A&E with DT1 (who is fine) so didn't end up cooking it. I defrosted it out of the fridge, but put it in the fridge about 4 yesterday - will it still be ok to cook today? I wouldn't worry if it were mince or other red meat, but with chicken I'm just never sure...don't want to poison DH and end up in A&E again!

Yes, I should think it will be fine.

Thank you. Will chance it then!

yes, it will be absolutely fine.

Assuming that it wasn't out of date when you put it in the freezer, it will be fine in the fridge for the usual three days, as if it were fresh.

At worst I would have put it in the freezer on its use-by date, knowing I wasn't going to use it in time.

Lots of chicken questions on food today .

how long has it been out of the freezer?

tkband3 · 31/03/2009 18:58

I got it out yesterday morning to defrost and put it in the fridge late afternoon.

I wouldn't.

I am very fussy with chicken and fish and for me, that is too long.

tkband3 · 31/03/2009 19:08

I'm like you Nabster, especially with chicken. But I read this article a few months ago about eating out of date food, even chicken and how use by dates always erred on the side of caution, so I've been a little more easy-going since then. But I still wanted to see what the MN food jury thought .

FIL was a food chemist and I always used to ask him these questions, but he's no longer with us .

Think I'll see how it smells when I open it and if I'm still not sure I'll bin it and raid the cupboard!

We ate it - and both lived to tell the tale ! Thank you for all the advice.
